Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der Weg zur heutigen mathematisch gestützten Naturwissenschaft – durchaus verbunden auch mit Kenntnissen in der Breite unserer Bevölkerung – verlief alles andere als klar und geradlinig. Zunächst erblühte alles aus dem Bemühen weniger einzelner im Mittelalter. Die Institutionen, zuerst die Schola – Schul- wie Universitätsniveau umgreifend – die kaiserlich, bischöflich, protestantisch oder kurfürstlich dominierte bzw. geförderte Universität, Schulen in reichsstädtischer Regie, das Gymnasium, erst humanistisch, später aber auch philantropisch/real, erfuhren unausgesetzte Modifikationen. Und so ist es faszinierend, die weit variierenden Grundpositionen zu verfolgen: des Erwartens der göttlichen Offenbarung, des Stöberns im Aristoteles, der Versuche im physikalischen Experiment, der mathematischen Methoden in der Astronomie, der naturphilosophischen Spekulation oder heute der mathematischen Modellbildung und Simulation, verbunden mit immer stärkerem Rechnereinsatz.
