Abstract

Zusammenfassung Eine recht alte Auffassung identifiziert die Mathematik mit dem Rechnen, etwa wenn diesbezüglich von Kärrnerarbeit die Rede ist. In völligem Gegensatz dazu betonen immer wieder einige die notwendige Phantasie oder gar das Künstlertum, das in der Mathematik unerlässlich sei. Steht dazwischen das Denken, von welchem ich den Eindruck habe, es verlaufe teils schon kreativ, aber in Teilen doch noch schematisch? Eine frühe Aussage in dieser Richtung stammt von Pringsheim: In dem wahren Mathematiker steckt allemal ein gutes Stück vom Künstler: vom Architekten, ja vom Poeten. Außerhalb der realen Welt, doch in erkennbarem Zusammenhange mit ihr, haben die Mathematiker in schöpferischer Gedankenarbeit sich eine ideale erbaut, die sie zur vollkommensten aller Welten auszugestalten suchen und nach allen Richtungen durchforschen.
