Abstract

Zusammenfassung Nach dem in England geltenden Julianischen Kalender kam Isaac Newton (Abb. 12.2) am Weihnachtstag 1642 in Woolsthorpe (bei Colsterworth, Lincolnshire) als Frühgeburt zur Welt. Die Abb. 12.3 zeigt das Geburtshaus und spätere Wohnhaus Newtons bis zu seinem Umzug nach London. Sein Vater Isaac war bereits drei Monate zuvor gestorben, die Mutter Hannah verließ ihn im Alter von drei Jahren um eine neue Ehe einzugehen. Newton wurde daher von der Großmutter mütterlicherseits großgezogen. Wegen seines eigenbrötlerischen Charakters war er ein Außenseiter unter den Grundschülern, der sich auf die Lektüre von Büchern konzentrierte. Seine Mutter brachte ihn daraufhin bei einer Apothekerfamilie unter, wo Newton ein besseres Umfeld vorfand.
