Abstract

Zusammenfassung Keine Gelehrtenfamilie kommt in wissenschaftlicher Berühmtheit der Familie Bernoulli gleich: Acht Mitglieder der Familie in drei Generationen haben sich durch ihre Leistungen in der Mathematik ausgezeichnet, drei darunter sind Mathematiker von erstem Rang. Abb. 10.1 zeigt den Stammbaum der Familie, der nur die für die Naturwissenschaften wichtigen Mitglieder anzeigt; die drei blau markierten Mathematiker werden in den folgenden Abschnitten besprochen. Zusammen mit Newton, Leibniz, Euler und Lagrange dominierte die Familie Bernoulli die Mathematik und Physik des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts und lieferte entscheidende Beiträge zur Differenzialrechnung, Geometrie, Mechanik, Ballistik, Thermodynamik, Hydrodynamik, Optik, Elastizität, zum Magnetismus, zur Astronomie und Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie.
