Abstract

Zusammenfassung Konvexe Polyeder in höheren Dimensionen sind die Grundbausteine für vielfältige mathematische Anwendungen in der Optimierung. Die platonischen Körper sind konvexe Polyeder in der Dimension 3. Sie bilden in vielen mathematischen Disziplinen wichtige Beispiele, nicht zuletzt für Symmetriebetrachtungen. Ich gebe in diesem Kapitel einen möglichst elementaren Einstieg in die Welt der Analoga zu den platonischen Körpern in höheren Dimensionen, um ein ungelöstes mathematisches Problem aus der Theorie konvexer Polyeder zu beschreiben. Dabei vermeide ich nach Möglichkeit mathematisches Spezialwissen. Ich versuche, in diesem Kapitel erste vierdimensionale Überlegungen zu vermitteln. Bei einem Problem in Kap. 7 über einen Messestandentwurf der Architekten wird nach Punkten in einem höherdimensionalen Würfel gesucht. Ich erkläre aus diesem Grund besonders die Eigenschaften des vierdimensionalen Würfels. Ein Spiel hilft dabei, sich mit dem Denken in höheren Dimensionen vertraut zu machen.
