Abstract

Zusammenfassung Es gibt kaum eine historische Person des Altertums, deren Biografie so umstritten ist wie die des Pythagoras. Abb. 4.1 zeigt eine historische Büste von Pythagoras (im orientalischen Stil) aus Pompeij. Für einige war er ein Philosoph, dessen Lehre auch noch nach Jahrhunderten eine Vielzahl von Anhängern fand. Für andere war er ein religiöser Sektenführer, der mit seiner Lehre über Vegetarismus und Seelenwanderung einen Geheimbund gründete, dessen Wirken durch Legendenbildung undurchschaubar war. Noch extremer sieht ihn W. Burkert, der ihn als Schamane bezeichnet.
