Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Tiara ist wie wenig andere ein Symbol des Papstes und des Papsttums, begriffen als das Herrscheramt über die katholische Kirche. Wir finden vielfältige Deutungen, als Sonne über der Erdkugel, als Symbol der Vergänglichkeit in Vanitas-Darstellungen des Barock oder auch als triumphaler Kopfschmuck. Wie so oft ist die Vielfalt der Erscheinungen und der damit verbundenen Deutungen verwirrend. Wir zeichnen die Entstehung der Tiara nach und geben in Abschnitt diesem Symbol eine Semantik, eine von vielen möglichen. Zum Schluss erlauben wir uns kurz das Vergnügen, auf eine verbreitete Verschwörungstheorie einzugehen.
