Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der Streit zwischen Samuel König einerseits und Maupertuis sowie der Berliner Akademie andererseits, in den auch Euler, König Friedrich II von Preußen und Voltaire verwickelt waren, zählt zu den berühmtesten Streitfällen in der Geschichte der Wissenschaften. Die Berliner Akademie entschied sich kurzerhand für ihren Präsidenten, aber Samuel König gewann mit seinem Appel au Public, der mit Schwung und Feuer die Sache der Wahrheit und die Regeln eines fairen Untersuchungsverfahrens in der sich herausbildenden Öffentlichkeit gegen institutionelle Machtpositionen verfocht, die Sympathien des gebildeten Publikums für sich. Samuel König ging aus dem Streit als der moralische Sieger hervor, – nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil er die Debatte vorwiegend auf dem Feld der beiderseitigen Vorgehensweisen führte und die gebildete Öffentlichkeit zum Richter über das Vorgehen der Institution Akademie aufrief.
