Abstract

Zusammenfassung Im Jahr 1948 zeigte Charney in seiner Veröffentlichung „On the Scale of Atmospheric Motion“ (Über die Größenordnung atmosphärischer Bewegungen), wie wir mithilfe des hydrostatischen- und geostrophischen Gleichgewichtes, zusammen mit der Erhaltung der potenziellen Temperatur und der potenziellen Vorticity, viel über das Wetter in den gemäßigten Breiten erfahren können. 15 Jahre später veröffentlichte Edward LorenzLorenz, Edward einen Aufsatz mit dem harmlos klingenden Titel „Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow“ (Deterministische nichtperiodische Strömungen), in dem er folgerte, dass Menschen niemals eine langfristige Wettervorhersage werden erstellen können. Würde Chaos alle bisherigen Leistungen der theoretischen Meteorologie zunichte machen?
