Abstract

Zusammenfassung Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts nutzten die Menschen Newtons Gesetze der Bewegung und Gravitation, um die Sonnenauf- und -untergangszeiten, die Mondphasen und die Gezeiten von Ebbe und Flut zu berechnen. Sorgfältig trugen sie die Daten in Kalender und Tagebücher ein, sodass diese erfolgreichen Anwendung der Wissenschaft für viele Menschen, von Fischern bis hin zu Bauern, nützlich war. Im Jahr 1904 veröffentlichte dann ein norwegischer Wissenschaftler einen Aufsatz, in dem er umriss, wie man die Schwierigkeiten der Wettervorhersage als mathematische und physikalische Fragestellung formulieren könnte. Seine Betrachtungsweise wurde ein Eckpfeiler der modernen Wettervorhersage. Während 9 der nächsten drei Dekaden folgten viele junge, talentierte Wissenschaftler dieser Idee – ihre 10 Forschungen legten die Grundlage der heutigen Meteorologie.
