Das Waringsche Problem

Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Folge der Quadratzahlen 1, 4, 9, 16, 25,... wird in ihrem Fortschreiten stets dünner, die Lücken zwischen je zwei benachbarten unter ihnen wachsen beständig. Aber es gibt dazwischen Zahlen, die wenigstens als Summe von zwei Quadratzahlen aufgefaßt werden können; so ist 13 = 9 + 4, 41 = 25 + 16 usf. Nicht jede Zahl kann als Summe von zwei Quadratzahlen aufgefaßt werden; z. B. bei der Zahl 6 kämen als Quadratzahlsummanden nur 1 und 4 in Betracht, die beiden einzigen unter 6 gelegenen Quadratzahlen. Aber weder 1 + 1 noch 4 + 4 noch 1 + 4 ergibt 6. Man kann 6 höchstens als Summe von drei Quadratzahlen darstellen, 6 = 4 + 1 + 1. Nach dem nämlichen Rezept wird es bei 7 nicht einmal mehr mit drei Quadratzahlen glücken; hier reichen erst vier aus: 7 = 4 + 1 + 1 + 1. Bei 8 = 4 + 4 reichen dann wieder zwei, 9 ist selbst Quadratzahl, 10 = 9 + 1, 11 = 9 + 1+ 1, 12 = 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 + 4 + 4 usw.
