Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Methode der kleinsten Quadrate ist zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts von A. M. Legendre und Carl Friedrich Gauß unabhängig voneinander ungefähr gleichzeitig gefunden worden. Legendre hat sie erstmalig im Jahre 1806 am Schluß eines kleinen Werkes über die Berechnung der Kometenbahnen entwickelt und eine zweite Abhandlung im Jahre 1810 veröffentlicht. Von ihm stammt der Name «méthode des moindres carrés» (englisch “method of the least squares”). Gauß hat von 1809 bis 1826 eine Anzahl von Abhandlungen meist in lateinischer Sprache erscheinen lassen, von denen die wichtigsten die Theoria motus corporum coelestium (1809) und die Theoria combinationis observationum erroribus minimis obnoxiae, pars prior (1821), pars posterior (1823) und supplementum (1826) sind.
