Abstract

The previous considerations make it clear that the traditional separation of nature and economy represents a consequential misunderstanding that continues to shape the structures of economic activity to this day. Reducing nature to a passive resource, provided in seemingly unlimited quantities, fails to recognize the fundamental embedding of all economic processes within biophysical systems. Economy and society are not autonomous, but exist as subsystems within the planet’s life-supporting foundations. This insight requires a radical re-evaluation of economic thinking.
