Abstract

ZusammenfassungKap. 8 wirft einen Blick in die Pariser Abendgesellschaft im Salon des Barons d’Holbach in dem Jahr 1765. Bei Tisch geht es in der gelehrten Konversation der versammelten Enzyklopädisten um die These des „doux commerce,“ des sanften Kommerzes. Zu Gast ist der britische Botschaftssekretär und Philosoph David Hume. Er gibt der versammelten Gesellschaft einen Bericht über seinen Besuch in dem Schloss von Versailles und das Gespräch dort zu diesem Thema. Im Anschluss an die Schilderung des Abends zeichnet das Kapitel die theoretische Argumentation von Hume nach. Sie stellt einen Ausgangspunkt für die Position seines jüngeren Freundes Adam Smith dar, die den Schwerpunkt des anschließenden Kap. 9 bildet.
