Larsen and Toubro (L&T) is a large Indian conglomerate with operations in more than 40 countries. The company has multiple lines of business, and the most significant one is construction business. In this division the company takes up turnkey projects ranging from nuclear reactors to offshore drilling platforms and metro rail projects around the world. India is investing heavily in urban public transportation projects and construction of metro and mono rails takes a large share of these investments. L&T is responsible for undertaking construction of majority of these projects. The case study describes the construction of these projects which are undertaken by L&T in the city of Mumbai and the logistics challenges the company faces in planning and execution of these projects. The case shows the difference between green field projects and urban projects, the sequence of construction of the metro and mono rail projects and challenges faced due to restricted space of the urban projects with people and transport moving on the roads on which the project is being executed and the way company finds solutions to these challenges.
