Abstract

Family businesses enjoy great appreciation—perhaps more than ever. In the numerous crises of recent years, they have proven their stability, which bodes well for the undoubtedly upcoming stress tests. Family businesses have shaped the character of the German economy, and they continue to do so. Fielmann, Henkel, Aldi, and Dr. Oetker are known to every child. The names of these companies stand for quality, innovative strength, and first-class market positioning. They have something that public companies often lack: a distinctive character. Behind this is the shaping force of strong personalities and tradition-conscious entrepreneurial families. The close connection between family and business is their actual recipe for success. Because it results in a powerful potential—a special dynamic, energy, and persistence that others lack.
