Abstract

Zusammenfassung Wie kaum ein Gelehrter in der langen Kulturgeschichte der Menschheit ist Kopernikus in das Bewusstsein der Menschen eingedrungen als der Astronom, der die Wissenschaften revolutionierte. Wie kam es dazu? Bei seinem Studium in Italien kam Kopernikus durch Vorlesungen bei Maria da Novarra mit neueren Planetentheorien in Kontakt. Er verfasste darüber den „Commentariolus“. Nach seiner Rückkehr in seine ermländische Heimat (in Ostpreußen, heute in Polen) arbeitete er in der Verwaltung des dortigen Bistums. Nebenher arbeitete er den „Commentariolus“ zu seinem großen Werk De revolutionibus orbium coelestium aus. Damals war die Ansicht verbreitet, die Astronomie sei „in Unordnung“, geraten, weil die Kalenderdaten nicht mehr der Wirklichkeit entsprachen. Rheticus, ein Mathematikprofessor aus Wittenberg, besuchte den 69-jährigen Domherrn und erhielt von ihm die Druckerlaubnis für das Werk, das in Nürnberg gedruckt und Kopernikus quasi auf dem Totenbett überreicht wurde.
