Der Mechanismus von Antikythera

Abstract

Zusammenfassung 1901 hob man aus dem Wrack eines um 60 v. Chr. vor der kleinen, 40 km von Kreta entfernten Insel Antikythera gesunkenen antiken Schiffes ein halb zerfallenes Holzkästchen, das ein Räderwerk aus Dutzenden von Zahnrädern enthielt. In einem über hundertjährigen Forschungsprozess konnte man das Geheimnis um den Mechanismus von Antikythera lüften: Der Mechanismus hatte auf der Vorderseite einen Sonnenzeiger mit dem Tierkreis, einen Mondzeiger mit Mondphasenzeiger, eine Anzeige für die alle 4 Jahre stattfindenden panhellenischen Spiele sowie auf der Rückseite mehrere Anzeigen zu astronomischen Ereignissen, vor allem eine Anzeige für vergangene und in der Zukunft erwartete Sonnen- und Mondfinsternisse. Mit einer Kurbel konnte man den ganzen Mechanismus in Gang setzen. Erst in der frühen Neuzeit tauchten ähnlich kunstvoll gefertigte Geräte in Gestalt astronomischer Uhren in Kirchen und an Rathäusern wieder auf, zum Beispiel die astronomische Uhr von 1511 am Tübinger Rathaus.
