Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Kapitel geht es um die folgenden drei Entfernungen: den Erdumfang (durch Eratosthenes; relativ genau), die Mondentfernung (in der Spätantike war ein relativ genauer Wert bekannt) und die Sonnenentfernung (durch Aristarch; ein viel zu kleiner Wert). Trotz eines viel zu kleinen Werts für die Sonnenentfernung kam Aristarch zu dem Schluss, dass die Sonne fünfmal so groß wie die Erde ist. Deshalb glaubte er nicht, dass ein so großer Himmelskörper sich um die kleine Erde dreht, sondern umgekehrt, dass die Erde die Sonne umläuft. Er war somit ein früher Vertreter des heliozentrischen Weltbilds, weshalb er auch „Kopernikus der Antike“ genannt wird. Zur Bestimmung der Mondentfernung waren zwei Messungen bzw. Berechnungen wichtig: die Bestimmung des Durchmessers des Erdkernschattens bei einer totalen Mondfinsternis und die Dauer des Monddurchgangs durch den Kernschatten der Erde als Vielfaches des Monddurchmessers.
