Abstract

Zusammenfassung Einsteins Hochschulkarriere begann 1909. Er wurde in diesem Jahr habilitiert und lehrte in Zürich und Prag. Auf Betreiben vor allem von Planck und Nernst wurde er 1914 an die Berliner Universität berufen. Bereits in Zürich hatte er mit seinem Freund Marcel Großmann, einem Spezialisten für Differenzialgeometrie, einen Entwurf für eine verallgemeinerte Relativitätstheorie erarbeitet, der aber noch nicht die richtigen Werte lieferte. Nun lud David Hilbert Einstein nach Göttingen ein, wo er seine Theorie vorstellen sollte. Die beiden korrespondierten darüber. Ende 1915 veröffentlichte er die nun richtige Version der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie (ART). Vier Tests der ART werden in diesem Kapitel besprochen. Besonders spektakulär war die Bestätigung der ART durch die Messungen der Ablenkung von Lichtstrahlen im Schwerefeld der Sonne, die der englische Astronom Eddington im Mai 1919 anlässlich einer Sonnenfinsternis durchführen ließ. Damit wurde Einstein weltweit bekannt.
