Abstract

Zusammenfassung In seinem annus mirabilis 1905 schreibt Einstein als Experte im Berner Patentamt mehrere bedeutende Arbeiten, die alle als nobelpreiswürdig gelten. Wir beschäftigen uns in diesem Kapitel mit seiner Lichtquantenhypothese. Die experimentelle Grundlage ist der Fotoeffekt, den Einstein so deutet, dass ein Lichtquant mit der Energie hν nur dann ein Elektron auslöst, wenn hν größer oder gleich der Austrittsarbeit eines Elektrons ist. Die Auffassung, dass die Energie des Lichts in Quantenform auftritt, stieß bei Anhängern der klassischen Physik auf Widerstand, auch bei Planck, breitete sich aber vor allem in der Atomistik aus und entwickelte sich bald zu einem neuen Zweig der Physik. In den 1920er-Jahren wurden immer mehr Experimente bekannt, bei denen die Quantentheorie unentbehrlich war, etwa beim Compton-Effekt, bei de Broglies Materiewellen und Heisenbergs Unschärferelation. Man sprach vom Teilchen-Welle-Dualismus.
