Abstract

Zusammenfassung Zu Beginn seines Physikstudiums fragte der junge Max Planck den Physikprofessor Jolly nach den Aussichten eines Physikstudiums. Jolly hielt das Fach für weitgehend erforscht ähnlich wie die Geometrie in der Mathematik. Planck studiere trotzdem Physik, promovierte mit 21 und wurde mit 22 Jahren habilitiert. Er forschte auf dem Gebiet der Thermodynamik und befasste sich in den 1890er-Jahren mit der Hohlraumstrahlung. Dabei entwickelte er 1900 sein Strahlungsgesetz, das einen mathematischen Zusammenhang zwischen Energie, Temperatur und Frequenz der Hohlraumstrahlung ergeben sollte. Wir folgen seinen Gedankengängen, die er in seinem Buch Wege zur physikalischen Erkenntnis niedergelegt hat und 1900 zur Aufstellung seines berühmten Strahlungsgesetzes geführt haben. Es enthält die Konstante h, die sich nach Planck gegenüber einer vernünftigen physikalischen Interpretation als „sperrig und widerspenstig“ erwies und doch den Beginn der Quantentheorie markierte.
