Abstract

Zusammenfassung Herschel, nach seiner Uranus-Entdeckung königlicher Hofastronomen in England, untersuchte die Struktur des Milchstraßenbandes und kam bei dessen Querschnitt auf die Form einer Ellipse, mit einem Achsenverhältnis von 11:2. Bessel wies 1838 die Fixsternparallaxe nach, ein Effekt, der nun ein klarer Beweis für das kopernikanische System war. Die Fortschritte in der Elektrik führten einerseits zur Entwicklung des Elektromotors, zum anderen zu der des Generators, der zur Erzeugung elektrischer Energie eingesetzt wurde. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde nach einer Voraussage von Maxwell die drahtlose Funkübertragung durch Heinrich Hertz entdeckt. Ferner wurden der Zusammenhang zwischen den „dunklen Linien“ im Sonnenspektrum und den in der Sonne und anderen Sternen vorhandenen chemischen Elemente aufgedeckt. Die Spektroskopie war damit eine wichtige Informationsquelle für die Astronomie.
