Abstract

Zusammenfassung In diesem Kapitel stehen Newtons Hauptwerk und sein Weg dorthin im Mittelpunkt. Durch einen Brief von Hooke von 1679 wurde Newton mit eine zentrale Frage der Himmelsmechanik in dessen Brief konfrontiert: Wie hängt das Gesetz vom umgekehrten Quadrat (dass die Anziehungskraft eines Zentralkörpers umgekehrt proportional zum Quadrat der Entfernung ist) mit der Tatsache zusammen, dass ein Planet den Zentralkörper Sonne auf einer Ellipse umläuft? Im Grunde war Newton bei seiner Mondrechnung schon sehr nahe an einer Lösung, aber erst 1684, nach einem Besuch von Halley, des Sekretärs der Royal Society, setzte bei Newton der Eifer ein, das himmelsmechanische Problem zu lösen. In einem 3-jährigen Denk- und Schreibmarathon löste Newton dies mit seinen Gesetzen, die er in dem Jahrtausendwerk Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica formulierte. In diesem Werk setzte er die damals neuesten mathematischen Mittel der Infinitesimalrechnung ein.
