Abstract

Zusammenfassung Newton trat im Oktober 1669 die Nachfolge seines Lehrers Barrow als Professor an. Er hatte damit die Aufgabe, Vorlesungen zu verschiedenen Gebieten aus Mathematik und Physik zu halten. Er hatte bereits während der Pestzeit in Woolsthorpe die Zusammensetzung des Sonnenlichts aus farbigen Licht entdeckt und führte dies seinen Studenten vor. Um die Vergrößerung von Fernrohren zu verbessern, baute er ein Spiegelteleskop, damals eine Neuerung, die störende Farbeffekte vermeiden sollte. Er wurde nach London eingeladen, um das Teleskop der Royal Society vorzuführen, und wurde daraufhin in die ehrwürdige Gesellschaft aufgenommen. Seine Farbtheorie vom weißen Licht wurde aber von führenden Mitgliedern der Society, z. B. Hooke, nicht vorbehaltlos akzeptiert. Der lang anhaltende Streit darüber führte dazu, dass Newton sich in den 1670er-Jahren nicht mehr mit Naturphilosophie befasste, sondern mit ganz anderen Gebieten, der Alchimie und der Theologie.
