Abstract

Zusammenfassung In der Schule fiel Isaac Newton als hochbegabter Schüler auf. Auf Betreiben des Schulleiters ließ ihn die Mutter studieren – der Vater war schon früh gestorben. Im Studium in Cambridge lernte er nicht so sehr aus Vorlesungen, sondern mehr autodidaktisch aus Büchern über Naturphilosophie und in der Mathematik die neueren Schriften über Reihenlehre und die ersten Ansätze zur Infinitesimalrechnung kennen. Als in Cambridge die Pest ausbrach und die Universität ihren Betrieb einstellte, verfasste er auf dem mütterlichen Gut seine berühmte Mondrechnung. Darin leitete er aus dem dritten Kepler‘schen Gesetz ab, dass die Anziehungskraft, welche die Erde auf den Mond ausübt, mit dem Quadrat der Entfernung abnimmt. Er kam zu dem Schluss, dass die Anziehungskraft der Erde sowohl den Mond auf seiner Bahn hält als auch auf der Erdoberfläche die Gegenstände auf den Boden fallen lässt, wie es Galilei experimentell herausgefunden hatte.
