Abstract

Zusammenfassung Zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts verschärfte sich der Gegensatz zwischen Wissenschaft und Theologie. Im Streit um die beiden Weltsysteme ging der Vatikan dazu über, das geozentrische System als das mit der Wirklichkeit übereinstimmende Modell, das kopernikanische System hingegen als reines Rechenmodell anzusehen, das nicht als wahr bezeichnet werden durfte. So teilte es der Großinquisitor Bellarmin 1616 Galilei in einem Brief mit. Galilei schrieb in den 1620er-Jahren den Dialog über die beiden hauptsächlichen Weltsysteme in der Form eines literarischen Gesprächs zwischen zwei Vertretern des heliozentrischen und einem als einfältig dargestellten Vertreter des geozentrischen Systems. Letzterem legte Galilei Passagen in den Mund, die nahe an den Äußerungen des Papstes lagen, der Galilei eigentlich bewunderte. Nun kannte der Papst keine Gnade mehr, und Galilei wurde zum Widerruf und zu lebenslanger Kerkerhaft verurteilt, die wenige Wochen später zu Hausarrest abgemildert wurde.
