Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mit der Erfindung des Fernrohrs 1608 durch holländische Glasmacher begann für Optik und Astronomie ein neues Zeitalter. Galilei gelangte 1609 an das neue Instrument und baute es wesentlich verbessert nach. Er richtete es zum Himmel und nahm erstaunliche Neuigkeiten wahr: Der Mond erschien mit Bergen und Tälern; als talentierter Maler fertigte er perfekte Zeichnungen von dessen Oberfläche an, entdeckte Anfang 1610 vier Jupitermonde, die den großen Planeten umlaufen, einer der sich mehrenden Verstöße gegen ein aristotelisches Prinzip. Die Venus zeigte Phasen, für ihn als Anhänger des kopernikanisches Systems ein deutliches Zeichen für das heliozentrische Weltbild. Der noch unbekannte, in Padua lehrende Mathematikprofessor wurde durch die Veröffentlichung seiner Beobachtungen in ganz Italien bekannt. Der bewunderte Wissenschaftler wurde auch mehrmals vom damaligen Papst zur Audienz empfangen, jedoch von der Inquisition argwöhnisch beobachtet.
