Abstract

Zusammenfassung Als die EWG 1958 Wirklichkeit wurde, herrschte Euphorie unter den sechs Mitgliedern. Es gab berechtigte Hoffnung, dass die damals bestehenden wirtschaftlichen Unterschiede (insbesondere zwischen Deutschland und Frankreich) im Laufe der Zeit einem homogenen Gebilde Platz machen würden. Die erste Erweiterung der EU im Jahr 1973 (um das Vereinigte Königreich, Irland und Dänemark) wurde für alle Seiten als politischer und wirtschaftlicher Erfolg verbucht. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten ist das UK stets gegen eine Vertiefung der Integration aufgetreten und hat sich in entscheidenden Bereichen eine Sonderstellung erarbeitet. Nach dem knapp erfolgreichen Austrittvotum vom Juni 2016 endete seine Mitgliedschaft nach 47 Jahren am 31. Januar 2020. Die Zeit dazwischen wurde genützt, um die künftigen Beziehungen zu regeln, nur in der Nordirlandfrage (mit oder ohne harte Grenze zur Republik Irland) konnte erst 2023 eine von den Verhandlungspartnern als fair bewertete Lösung gefunden werden, deren Bestand sich erst bewähren muss.
