Abstract

Zusammenfassung Jede Einzelperson verfügt über eine Identität, die sich aus der Verschränkung von vertikalen Elementen (Familie, Gemeinde, Nation, Europa) und horizontalen Faktoren (Sprache, Religion und Bildungsniveau) ergibt. Kollektive Identität von großen Personengruppen, die über gemeinsame Merkmale miteinander verbunden sind, existiert auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen, deren bedeutendste die Nation ist. Demgegenüber ist die „europäische Identität“ ein vielschichtiger, schwammiger Begriff geblieben, dem kein einheitliches Konzept zugrunde liegt und der sich noch dazu an den Wandel der inneren und äußeren Rahmenbedingungen laufend anpasst. Regionale und nationale Identitäten sind stärker verankert als das Bewusstsein, zu einem europäischen Kollektiv zu gehören. Dies muss aber kein Nachteil sein, weil nationale Identitäten – sofern sie nicht in Chauvinismus ausarten – als Vorbedingung und Vorbild für eine europäische Identität dienen können.
