Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Geschichte der Seefahrt gehört zu den erstaunlichsten Kapiteln in der Geschichte der Menschheit. Von der Luft abgesehen, gibt es keinen Ort, der so wenig für den Menschen geschaffen scheint, wie das Wasser. Trotzdem zog es ihn schon immer dorthin hinaus. Das Internationale Maritime Museum Hamburg zeichnet diese ebenso abenteuerliche wie riskante Reise nach, die den Menschen vom primitiven Floß bis auf das Deck atombetriebener Flugzeugträger führte. Wie sehr die See schon immer die Fantasie beflügelte, zeigen auch Mythen, in denen Seefahrten eine entscheidende Rolle einnehmen. Die vielleicht berühmteste ist dabei die Irrfahrt des Odysseus gewesen. Auch das Radar, das aus der modernen Welt nicht wegzudenken ist, wurde im Rahmen der Seefahrt erfunden – und dann erstmal über Jahrzehnte hinweg wieder vergessen. Der spannenden Geschichte der Schiffe und Ozeane wird in diesem Museum auf den (Meeres-)Grund gegangen.
