Abstract

Zusammenfassung Seit die Menschen vor etwa 5000 Jahren die Schrift erfunden haben, haben sie nicht mehr mit dem Schreiben aufgehört. Was wohl am eindrucksvollsten zeigt, wie wichtig diese Kulturtechnik ist. Im Deutschen Buch- und Schriftmuseum in Leipzig wird auf die Geschichte des Lesens und Schreibens eingegangen. Dabei wird auch deutlich, wie lange gesellschaftliche Eliten dieses Wissen für sich behalten wollten. Erst mit dem Buchdruck änderte sich die Situation zunehmend, bevor schließlich die schiere Flut an Publikationen von keiner Zensur mehr – auch nicht von der hartnäckigen katholischen – überblickt werden konnte. Um das Schreiben und Lesen tobte noch im 19. Jahrhundert ein Kulturkrieg, da reaktionäre Kreise speziell in lesenden Frauen eine Gefahr für Ordnung und Moral sahen. Vor allem durch Romane würden diese hysterisch werden und könnten ihren gesellschaftlichen Pflichten nicht mehr nachkommen.
