Abstract

Zusammenfassung Wir Homo sapiens waren nicht immer die einzige Menschenart. Die bekannteste andere ist der Neandertaler, der erst vor etwa 40.000 Jahren ausstarb. Im Neandertal Museum in Mettmann geht es um unsere ausgestorbene Verwandtschaft und die Frage, was wir über all die anderen Homo-Zweige wissen – was bislang erstaunlich wenig ist. Der Ort des Museums ist dabei selbst schon Teil der Menschheitsgeschichte, denn nur wenige Meter entfernt befindet sich das Neandertal, wo im Jahr 1856 ein entsprechendes Skelett gefunden wurde, nach dem diese Menschengattung benannt ist. In der Ausstellung geht es auch darum, welche Fähigkeiten dafür sorgten, dass der Homo sapiens nicht ausstarb, sondern sich erfolgreich auf der ganzen Welt durchsetzen konnte.
