Abstract

Zusammenfassung Innovationstätigkeit lässt sich im Unterschied zu anderen volkswirtschaftlichen Größen wie dem BIP oder dem Durchschnittseinkommen weniger exakt quantifizieren. Als Indikator für Innovationen werden in der empirischen Forschung vielfach Patente verwendet, deren Einsatz jedoch auch kritisiert wird. Im Folgenden diskutieren wir zunächst die Vorzüge und Nachteile von Patentdaten und stellen dann Weltausstellungsexponate als alternativen Indikator für Innovationstätigkeit vor. Abschließend beschreiben wir kurz den Datensatz, der sowohl Patente als auch Weltausstellungsdaten als Indikatoren für Innovationstätigkeit enthält.
