Abstract

Zusammenfassung Der Demographische Wandel bzw. die Alterung der Bevölkerung ist ein weltweites Phänomen, ausgelöst durch den Rückgang der Geburtenrate und den Anstieg der Lebenserwartung. In Europa ist diese Entwicklung vergleichsweise weit fortgeschritten und beeinflusst zahlreiche wirtschaftliche Bereiche. Abgesehen von einem Rückgang und der Alterung der Erwerbsbevölkerung sind die geänderten Nachfragestrukturen der privaten Haushalte und finanzielle Herausforderungen für die öffentliche Hand zentrale Aspekte, welche durchaus eine negative Entwicklungsspirale – insbesondere in ländlichen Regionen – auslösen können. Wirtschaftspolitische Maßnahmen, um die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der regionalen Wirtschaft zu unterstützen, sowie eine zukunftsorientierte Arbeitsmarkt-, Bildungs-, Finanz- und Regionalpolitik sind gefordert, um für die bestehenden Herausforderungen gerüstet zu sein. Potenziale scheinen in vielen Bereichen gegeben; es gilt umzudenken bzw. bestehende Systeme an die neuartigen Gegebenheiten anzupassen.
