Abstract

China’s labour market is developing as fast as China’s economy so that the educational level of the population is improving and wage costs are rising. However, the economy’s success continues to rely on cheap labor, whose working conditions are marked by discrimination and social immobility. Rural poverty flight developed into the largest migration wave in history. This is being used by the Chinese Communist Party to satisfy the market of cheap labour in the cities. However, recent developments show that the tertiary labor sector is becoming increasingly important to the competitive capabilities of the Chinese economy. There is controversy about when the labor surplus will eventually be used up.
