Abstract

The immense economic growth in the People’s Republic of China is leading to a sharp rise in energy demand, making China the world’s largest consumer of energy. Until now, coal has been the main source of energy to meet the growing demand. The increasing health burden on the population caused by smog and by exceeding the carbon dioxide targets set by the government in large parts of China means that new energy sources are coming to the fore. In addition to renewable energies such as wind power, solar power, hydropower, and geothermal energy, nuclear power is one of the most important new energy suppliers.
