Abstract

Zusammenfassung Was hat der Mensch auf seiner Erde angerichtet? Sind die Schäden noch zu heilen? Darauf antworten wir im Kap. 3. Wir untersuchen u. a die Zerstörung gewaltiger Naturräume, die Vermüllung der Weltmeere, die Folgen des Klimawandels. Diese und weitere Gefährdungen haben jede für sich das Potenzial zur Vernichtung allen Lebens. Diese Szenarien aber interagieren zudem auch untereinander. Das Resultat ist nicht die einfache Addition von gewaltigen Zerstörungskräften, sondern ein exponentieller Zuwachs. So ist der Zustand der Ozeane eine Gefahr für die Welternährung. Das Ansteigen der Meeresspiegel durch das Schmelzen des Polareises weiht aber auch ganze Inselgruppen im Pazifik dem Untergang. Wir dokumentieren, dass bei vielen unserer natürlichen Ressourcen die Zerstörung so weit fortgeschritten ist, dass Regeneration nicht möglich ist. Befürchtet werden interaktive Prozesse, die schneller als „nur“ der Klimawandel das Leben auf unserem Planeten unmöglich machen.
