Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die EU verkörpert ein Gesellschaftsmodell, mit dem zwar das wirtschaftliche Ziel verfehlt wurde, im Einkommensniveau zu den USA aufzuschließen, doch kann die EU für sich beanspruchen, zur „Lifestyle Superpower“ (Rachman, 2010) aufgestiegen zu sein. Die Marke „Made in Europe“ steht in der Welt für Güter, die hohe technische Standards kombiniert mit anspruchsvollem Design repräsentieren. Die EU hat sich als „Konvergenzmaschine“ (Gill & Raiser, 2012) bewährt, die in der Lage ist, ärmere Länder hereinzuholen und sie dann über die Zeit wohlhabender zu machen. Doch ist die euphorische Phase der EU, gekennzeichnet durch die stufenweise Erweiterung der Gemeinschaft, ins Stocken geraten. Eine Reihe aufeinanderfolgender Krisen, primär von außen kommend, hält die EU seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt in einem fast depressiven Zustand.
