Abstract

Zusammenfassung Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929) war das sechste von 12 Kindern norwegischer Einwanderer. Er wuchs auf einer Farm in Nerstrand, Minnesota, auf. Zusammen mit John Commons ist er der Begründer des kritischen Institutionalismus. Mit Blick auf seine ökonomischen Schriften (1898, 1904, 1919a und 1923, zusammengestellt in Veblen 1994) gilt er auch als Begründer der Evolutionsökonomik. Seine Beiträge zeigen eine starke soziale und wirtschaftliche Motivation mit Sympathie für den einfachen Mann und gegen große oligopolistische Unternehmen. Darüber hinaus war Veblen ein Universalgelehrter, dessen Dissertation sich mit der Philosophie von Kant und Peirce befasste. Er entwickelte eine Motivationstheorie (1914) und verfasste methodologische (1919a) und hellsichtige politische Schriften (1915; für die Rezeption von Veblen siehe Wood (Hrsg.) 1993). Veblens Denkschule lebt u. a. in der Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE) und im Journal of Economic Issues (JEI) fort, das von AFEE herausgegeben wird.
