Abstract

Zusammenfassung Algebraische Zahlentheorie im Sinne von „höherer Arithmetik“ für Zahlen, die allgemeiner sind als die üblichen ganzen, wurde bereits von Carl Friedrich Gauß (1777–1855) eingeführt und dann, unter anderem, von Ernst Eduard Kummer (1810–1893) weiterentwickelt. Richard Dedekinds (1831–1916) Supplement XI. „Über die Theorie der ganzen algebraischen Zahlen“ kann also nicht beanspruchen, der erste Beitrag zu dieser Teildisziplin der Mathematik zu sein, es ist aber derjenige Text, in dem die algebraische Zahlentheorie zum ersten Mal in moderner, auch heute noch aktueller Weise dargestellt wird, insbesondere mit der Ersetzung bzw. Konkretisierung der von Kummer eingeführten „idealen Zahlen“ durch das Dedekindsche Konzept der „Ideale“.
