Abstract

Zusammenfassung Dieses Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit dem eSport-Engagement deutscher Clubs im Profifußball in der Saison 2018/19. Dabei wird die Thematik eSport im Fußball (eFootball) zunächst anhand einer grundsätzlichen Verortung sowie einer Auseinandersetzung mit bestehenden Stakeholdern in diesem Bereich bearbeitet. Anhand einer Sekundäranalyse und Experteninterviews wird zudem die Ausprägung des aktuellen eSport-Engagements der unterschiedlichen Clubs mittels einer Kategorisierung verdeutlicht. Aufbauend darauf werden Chancen und Risiken des eSports für den Profifußball aufgezeigt. Dabei lassen sich in der Saison 2018/19 vier Kategorien von Clubs mit einem eSport-Engagement identifizieren, welche sich bezüglich des Umfangs und der Dauer des Engagements sowie der Verortung innerhalb des Clubs und der kommunikativen Wirkung unterscheiden. Abschließend werden Chancen und Risiken des eSports für Profifußballclubs aufgezeigt. Ob eSport zu einem zukünftigen Erfolg der Clubs beitragen kann, wird stark von der Art und Weise abhängen, inwieweit dieses Engagement mit der strategischen Ausrichtung des Clubs langfristig vereinbar ist. Zukünftig wird es zudem interessant sein, ob es gelingt, die Interessen bestehender Fans des Clubs und neuer Anhänger des eSports zu vereinen.
