Abstract

In this chapter, we will discuss how the different sources of parenting advantage of a multi-business firm can be merged into a consistent corporate parenting strategy, and how this parenting strategy can contribute to operationalizing corporate strategy. To this end, we will introduce six archetypes of parenting strategies and describe their respective strengths, weaknesses, and specific success factors. We will describe the key criteria for choosing the best parenting strategy for a given company and the process of finding the optimal degree of parental involvement. Finally, we will explain how the parenting strategy can be translated into the design of the corporate center and of the corporate organization, including outlines of structure, mandates and decision rights, people, processes, and tools.
