Abstract

Zusammenfassung Dass jede Gleichung eine Lösung hat, sagt noch nichts darüber, ob man diese durch Rechnung (Grundrechenarten und Wurzelziehen) auch finden kann. Die Frage, für welche Gleichungen dies gelingt und für welche nicht, hat Évariste Galois beantwortet. Obwohl er damit das bis dahin wichtigste Problem der Algebra gelöst hat, blieb ihm die Anerkennung zeitlebens versagt und er starb mit 20 Jahren unter tragischen Umständen durch ein Duell. Am Vorabend dieses Ereignisses fasste er in einem Brief an seinen Freund seine wichtigsten mathematischen Leistungen, darunter seine Arbeiten zur Auflösbarkeit von Gleichungen, in großer Klarheit zusammen. Wir nehmen diesen Brief als Vorlage, um seine Gedanken nachzuzeichnen. Er ordnet einer Gleichung ein sehr viel einfacheres Objekt zu, eine endliche Gruppe, und daran kann er die Frage der Auflösbarkeit entscheiden. Der Gruppenbegriff, der seitdem von zentraler Bedeutung für die Mathematik ist, wird bei dieser Gelegenheit geprägt. Andere damit zusammenhängende Fragen, z.B. geometrische Konstruktionsprobleme (17-Eck und Winkel-Drittelung) werden in den Übungen behandelt.
