Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das Wort ”Algebra“ stammt aus dem Arabischen. Im arabisch-muslimischen Kulturkreis wurde im Mittelalter, besonders zwischen 700 und 1100, das Wissen aus der griechischen Antike und aus Indien gesammelt und weiterentwickelt. Die Algebra entstand dort als eigenes Gebiet neben der Geometrie, mit neuen Methoden, die den Umgang mit Gleichungen und Variablen betrafen. In diesem Rahmen wurden quadratische und auch bereits kubische Gleichungen behandelt, großenteils aus der Geometrie motiviert; ihre Lösungen wurden als Schnitte von Kreisen und Parabeln dargestellt (Omar Khayyam). Der erste bedeutsame Beitrag der europäischen Mathematik zur Algebra war im 16. Jahrhundert die Entwicklung von Lösungsformeln für Gleichungen dritten und vierten Grades, an der mehrere Mathematiker in Oberitalien beteiligt waren. Diese spannende Geschichte von Konkurrenz, Freundschaft und Verrat fand 1545 in dem Buch ”Ars Magna“ von Gerolamo Cardano ihren Höhepunkt.
