Abstract

Zusammenfassung In Platons Dialog ”Theaitetos“ findet sich die Bemerkung, ein gewisser Theodoros habe die Irrationalität der Qudratwurzeln bis √17 ”durch Zeichnungen“ bewiesen, aber nicht weiter. Benno Artmann fand 1994 heraus, welche Zeichnungen Theodoros vermutlich angefertigt hat und warum die nachfolgende Wurzel √19 für ihn unerreichbar war. Diese verblüffend einfachen Figuren enthalten viel mehr als nur den Beweis der Irrationalität; aus ihnen lässt sich der Wert der Quadratwurzel mit beliebiger Genauigkeit ermitteln, denn sie kodieren den unendlichen Prozess der Wechselwegnahme für die Quadratwurzel im Verhältnis zu Eins. Der Prozess ist periodisch, was sich in der Selbstähnlichkeit der Figuren ausdrückt. Diese Eigenschaft wurde von Theodoros bis √17 beobachtet; erst über zwei Jahrtausende später hat Lagrange sie allgemein bewiesen. Wir geben ein sehr einfaches Argument dafür.
