Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Riemannsche Geometrie wurde zunächst mit Formeln in lokalen Koordinaten beschrieben. Für globale Aspekte, die den Bereich eines einzelnen Koordinatensystems überschritten, musste man ihre Konzepte, insbesondere den Begriff der Krümmung neu verstehen. Eine der ersten Resultate dieser neuen ”Riemannschen Geometrie im Großen“ war der Sphärensatz von Marcel Berger und Wilhelm Klingenberg (1961): Eine einfach zusammenhängende kompakte Mannigfaltigkeit mit Krümmung strikt zwischen 1/4 und 1 ist vom einfachsten topologischen Typ, dem der Sphäre. Die Ungleichung ist scharf: Wenn beide Schranken angenommen werden dürfen, gibt es Gegenbeispiele. Wir geben nicht den Originalbeweis wieder, sondern einen späteren, sehr viel anschaulicheren, der auf Michail Gromov zurückgeht und die Beziehung zwischen der Krümmung und der Konvexität der Abstandskugeln oder ihrer Komplemente ausnutzt.
