Abstract

Zusammenfassung Nach dem Beweis des Satzes von Riemann-Roch war es klar, dass Hirzebruch einer der aufsteigenden Sterne in der Mathematik sein würde. Er hatte nicht nur großartige mathematische Resultate erzielt, sondern jeder konnte sich auch davon überzeugen, dass er glänzende Vorträge und Vorlesungen hielt, und sein ausgleichendes und bedachtes Wesen ließ erwarten, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm im Institutsbetrieb und der akademischen Selbstverwaltung reibungslos verlaufen würde. Er war alles andere als ein Einzelgänger (die es in der Mathematik auch gab), sondern eingebunden in einen großen Bekannten- und Freundeskreis. Das Einzige, was man hätte einwenden können, war seine Jugend, doch dies war ein Mangel, von dem – wie der Pharmazeut Karl Winterfeld später in den Diskussionen der Berufungskommission bemerkte – man mit Sicherheit wusste, dass er vorübergehen würde.
