Abstract

Zusammenfassung Am 31.10.1995 endete Hirzebruchs Amtszeit als Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts. Es war eine wesentliche Zäsur in seinem Leben, ein tieferer Einschnitt als seine Emeritierung als Universitätsprofessor. Die lange Periode seines Lebens, die mit der Ernennung zum Professor in Bonn am 1.6.1956 begonnen hatte, fand ihren Abschluss. Vielleicht änderte sich an seinem täglichen Leben zunächst nicht sehr viel, aber es muss einen großen Unterschied gemacht haben, nicht mehr allein die Verantwortung für das MPI zu tragen.
