Abstract

Zusammenfassung Seit der Vorkriegszeit hatte die Mathematik in Polen auch im internationalen Vergleich ein hohes Niveau. Als ein Ergebnis der allgemeinen Wertschätzung wurde beschlossen, den Internationalen Mathematiker-Kongress 1982 in Warschau abzuhalten. Die politischen Ereignisse in Polen, auf die hier nicht eingegangen wird, führten zu einer Stornierung und erneuten Diskussion dieser Entscheidung. Der Kongress wurde dann mit einjähriger Verspätung vom 16. bis 24.8.1983 veranstaltet. Vorsitzender des Organisationskomitees und Präsident des Kongresses war Czesław Olech, der vor und nach der politischen Wende eine führende Rolle in Polen spielte. Er war Direktor der beiden angesehensten Institutionen der Mathematik in Polen, von 1970 bis 1986 des Mathematischen Instituts der Polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (IMPAN) und von 1972 bis 1991 des Banach-Zentrums (Stefan Banach International Mathematical Center) in Warschau.
